בשימוש בפעם הראשונה, מומלץ להחזיק את המטוטלת ביד (שמאלה לאנשים שמאליים, ימין לאנשים ימניים)

בשלב השני יש ללמוד אותה, לבקש לקבל את ״לא״ ואת ה״כן״

ברוב המקרים מקבלים ״לא״ בתנועה סיבובים נגד השעון, וה״כן״ בתנוע סיבובית כיוון השעון.

יש לקחת בחשבון שהמטוטלת נותנת רק תשובות בינאריות (כן/לא; חם/קר; רחוק/קרוב וכו') ולכן השאלות לא יכולות להיותמעורפלות מדי ועדיף לעשות סדרות של שאלות החל מהכלליות ביותר ועד המדויק ביותר.

בסופו של דבר, צריך רק ריכוז, תרגול וסבלנות כדי להגיע לתשובות ספציפיות.
